Hex Me: Hex By Sindicato Robusto Review
Sindicato, a company established by a coalition of retailers, released three cigars in 2013; Affinity, Hex and the bundle cigar Casa Bella. I have already covered details regarding Sindicato and even reviewed Affinity in earlier posts. My review of Affinity highlighted the cigar’s mild flavor, great construction and excellent price point, making it an exceptional choice for any connoisseur in search of a quality mild bodied cigar that doesn’t cost an exorbitant amount of money. Affinity by Sindicato was such a well constructed cigar that I was eager to try its fuller spicier counterpart, Hex by Sindicato.
Hex by Sindicato is a medium to full bodied cigar expertly crafted with tobaccos that are aged and selected for their quality and flavor. The Nicaraguan binder and filler are encased with a rich dark Ecuadorian Habano wrapper giving the cigar a wonderfully dark and consistent coloration. In addition to the outstanding wrapper, Hex is superbly constructed with zero soft spots or plugs in the cigar. Notes of leather and earth with a slight coffee finish highlight an effortless draw test.
1/3- Hex by Sindicato starts off fairly smooth, lacking any pepper notes that I thought I would find when initially lighting the cigar. The cigar remains relatively constant throughout the entirety of the first third with notes of coffee bean, and earth with a mild hint of black pepper. The retrohale reveals much of the same with the addition of a woody note.
2/3- Hex marks the second third by eliminating the pepper elements of the cigar. The cigar is doing something unusual in the fact that I am not noticing the classic ramp up of pepper and earth notes normally expected from cigars blended with Nicaraguan tobacco. The mellowing of any spice element helps bring the notes of coffee bean and cocoa to the forefront, while earthy and leathery notes help to balance the sweetness of the coffee and cocoa notes of the cigar.
3/3- The end of Hex continues to build on the trends found in the second third of the cigar. By this point, the pepper note has faded, while the notes of leather and earth have gotten stronger, thus balancing the sweeter notes of the cigar. Overall, I found Hex by Sindicato to be an enjoyable cigar with heavy cocoa and coffee notes and impeccable construction.
