Cigar Review: H.Upmann Legacy Toro

The newest release from H.Upmann, H.Upmann Legacy is inspired by the rich history of the H.Upmann name in the cigar industry. Taking advantage of tobaccos from three Central American countries, H.Upmann Legacy features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and filler tobacco from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. On the outside, the H.Upmann Legacy is a feast for the eyes. The head and foot bands make use of festive brown, orange, and green encased in a gold border to create an eye catching contrast to the lightly tanned Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Closer inspection of the cigar reveals superb construction with minimal veins and even firmness throughout. One cold draw from the Legacy reveals an easy draw with notes of grass, cedar, and spice. Putting the match to the foot, it’s time to dig in and see what the H.Upmann Legacy has in store.

A Full Box of Legacy Robusto

1/3: Right off the light, the Legacy is really smooth, almost too smooth. While buttery notes of cream and cedar coat my taste buds, I notice a slight spice note on the retrohale. The burn of the cigar is razor sharp and does not require any touch up at all. As the solid white ash begins to grow, the sweet notes of the cigar are given added depth with the addition of soft pepper notes. If the rest of the Legacy is a flavorful as the first third, I am certainly in for a great surprise.

2/3: The second third of the Legacy fires off with a slight increase in spice notes as the sweetness of the first third moves from the forefront to the background. The slightly ramped up spice notes add a great balanced depth to the cigar. By this point, the Legacy has progressed from a sweet mild bodied cigar to a well balanced flavorful medium bodied smoke. Towards the end of the second third, I notice slight downturn in the spice tones, which is replaced with a nutty note.

The Nutty H.Upmann Legacy

Final Third and Parting Thoughts: At the end of my journey with the Legacy, I taste most of the flavors found in the second third of the cigar. The pepper spice is still noticeable only on the retrohale, while nutty and cedar tones of the cigar have taken over the profile. Overall, the H.Upmann Legacy is a solid cigar. From a sweet mild start to a nutty medium bodied finish, this cigar has a depth of flavor that is pleasant and easy to enjoy. For fans of H.Upmann cigars, the Legacy is a homerun; and for smokers who haven’t smoked H.Upmann in a while, the Legacy is a great reason to revisit the brand. H. Upmann Legacy is available in three sizes, Corona, Robusto, and Toro, in boxes of 20 at all five Emerson’s Cigars Hampton Roads locations as well as emersonscigars.com.
