E P Carrillo Short Run 2012

Cigar Review: E P Carrillo Short Run 2012

As a big fan of most EPC cigars I was glad to see the arrival of the E P Carrillo Short Run 2012.  It contains the same wrapper as the EPC New Wave Connecticut and the same binder/filler as the EPC Core Maduro.

Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Nicaraguan/Dominican

Exquisitos 4 7/8 x 50
Invictos 5 7/8 x 52
Reinados 6 ¼ x 60

Pre-light:  The Short Run 2012 has a nice Connecticut Shade Grown wrapper with minimal veins to it.  Same band as the NWC with a secondary SR 2012 added.  Pre-light draw was a little bit of cedar, hay and a little spice to it.  The feel of the cigar isn’t overly packed with tobacco, in fact it seems a little spongey but very consistent throughout.

E P Carrillo Short Run 2012First Third:  Upon lighting the draw and burn have been great. Flavor and strength I would say are on the mild to medium side, but picked up a little bit as I finish the first third.  I am getting a little bit of spice and cedar with a hint of a sweet tobacco taste as well.  I can’t quite put my finger on it but there seems to be a little hint of a mint taste to it as well in the first third.

E P Carrillo Short Run 2012Second Third:  As I make my way through the second third, the cigar has picked up slightly in strength with a bit of a peppery burn to the retrohale.  Ash held on tight for about 2 inches before falling off and is a very marbled medium gray color.  The spice and hay have picked up a bit and I am still getting a little of that mint flavor noted in the first third.

E P Carrillo Short Run 2012Final Third:  In to the final third I am getting huge plumes of smoke, this cigar is burning great as well.  The cedar/pepper has built up in strength the entire smoke and that “minty” flavor has faded in to the background.  As expected with the Connecticut Shade wrapper, the cigar never really got past Medium in strength but was a little past Medium in flavor.

I felt the folks at EPC did a great job with this years Short Run and it is nice they changed it up from the past two years a bit more. I am finding I really enjoy most cigars that EPC has to offer.  Suggested retail on the Short Run is between a little over $6 and just under $9 for the various sizes, which to me seems like a great price for a great cigar!

The E P Carrillo Short Run 2012 should be hitting our stores the week of March 5, 2012, stay tuned for more details!
